Witold Malcuzynski - Sergei Rachmaninoff - The Piano Concerto No. 3
A 1949 recording of Polish pianist Witold Malcuzynski playing Rachmaninoff's
Piano Concerto No.3
with the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Paul Kletzki.
The sessions took place at Abbey Road Studio No.1 in London on April 26-27, 1949.
A month earlier, recording producer Walter Legge had arranged for Malcuzynski
to be Dinu Lipatti's replacement on a tour to Australia that would
take place shortly after this studio recording was made.
This reading of Rachmaninoff's legendary work
incorporates a number of cuts sanctioned by
the composer himself that were commonly implemented at the time,
and Malcuzynski and his compatriot Kletzki
adopt brisk tempi similar to the composer's
own recording, Malcuzynski playing throughout with a beautifully
burnished sonority, rhythmic vitality,
clear balance of primary and inner voices, and impassioned phrasing.
